Locally grown food has long been part of the urban experience. From backyard vegetable patches to community gardens and public markets, products of the earth are part of city-dwellers’ daily reality and underpin human relationships.
Through 24 large-scale photographs from the McCord Museum’s Photography collection, taken mainly in and around Montreal, Eating Local explores urban food practices from the 1860s to the 1990s.
At a time when we’re increasingly concerned about the source of our food, this exhibition reminds us that, in the past, access to local agricultural products was an ordinary part of city life.
